Tire recycling applications range from automotive and agricultural products to pavement and playground materials. In fact, one application for recycled tires is tire-derived fuel for power plants. This fuel is used in the manufacture of cement, paper and other materials, thus reducing our dependence on fossil fuels.
Recycled tires are all around you, and most people don't even know it. Here are just a few of the ways Lakin Tire and its partners put discarded and used tires to other uses:
Civil Engineering Applications / Tire Derived Aggregate
Recycled tires have been used in civil engineering projects that have improved our nation's roads and highways. Projects have included freeway construction in Riverside, CA and slide repair in Humbolt and Mendocino Counties. The benefits of Tire Derived Aggregate are that it provides lightweight fill for embankment and retaining walls, and helps mitigate vibration. TDA also provides excellent drainage.
Rubberized Asphalt
Rubber Asphalt has been used to strengthen and improve liquid asphalt. Besides having a longer life, this modifier produces better results with less material. It reduces cracking, rutting, improves skid resistance and reduces the cost of maintenance. It also lessens the environmental impact, by placing used tires in applications that benefit us all-our nation's roadways.
Tire Derived Fuel
This cement processing plant uses tire derived fuel as its main source of power. But tires and rough tire chips are used at pulp and paper mills, power plants, waste-to-energy plants and industrial boilers as well. In fact, in 2000, almost 47 percent of the 273 million scrap tires in the United States were used to fuel these types of factories.
Crumb Rubber Feedstock
Crumb Rubber Feedstock has universal applications. The recycling of tires as raw material for useful products is one that has wide benefits. If fact, Lakin Tire is happy to be part of our work with one retailer that truly encapsulates the "life cycle" of a tire. First, as a part of our Tire Collection Service, we remove used tires from the auto centers of a national retail chain. Next, we recycle the rubber material into landscape mulch, package and present it back to the retailer's locations, where it is resold in the gardening department. This represents recycling at its finest.
Here are some other useful ways tires have gotten a second life as Crumb Rubber feedstock:
Molded Products
Crumb Rubber works well with products that produced in high-volume, such as rubber floor mats, removable speed bumps and more.
Athletic Surfaces
Playgrounds and sports courts are constructed with rubber granules, a mix of urethane and crumb rubber. This material is also used in athletic turf, to help reduce soil compaction and improve drainage and as a safe alternative to wood chips for playground surfaces.
